Scottish Children’s Mission is an interdenominational
mission which was established in 1984. The main thrust of Scottish
Children’s Mission is to initiate, in conjunction with local Churches,
activities to promote the sharing of the Christian faith with
children. The mission has worked in and with many Churches in
Scotland, England and Wales. Ongoing work has also taken place in
Russia, America, Nicaragua, Kenya and many other countries.
Mike Taylor is the principle worker and prior to establishing
Scottish Children’s Mission had eight years experience working with
“The Caravan Mission to Village Children”. Mike studied with Child Evangelism Fellowship in
Switzerland and gained practical experience while working with Youth With a Mission for three years.
Mike also completed a two year theological training course with the Assemblies of God and has
completed a Child Protection Course with the Church of Scotland.
Scottish Children’s Mission was also involved with others in establishing Mannafields Christian School
in Edinburgh in 1988. Mike continues his involvement with the school in his role as Chaplain.
What we Do
Scottish Children’s Mission is committed to teaching the Bible to children and, where possible, to
assist local believers to nurture these children into full Christian maturity.
This is achieved by:
•
Providing training classes for children’s workers
•
Working with a host church or fellowship in leading a children’s mission
•
Taking special meetings, e.g. Christmas and Easter family services
•
Running “Holiday Clubs”
•
Organising and leading conferences for children
•
Providing a parallel programme for children to coincide with an adult conference
The need to teach the Bible to children is increasingly urgent as we see the erosion of Christian
principles evidenced by the moral decline of the nation.
At one children’s meeting, when asked what the word “sin” meant, none of the forty children present
could answer correctly. One of the children suggested that it was short for “Cinderella”
Unfortunately, this experience is not uncommon. As Sunday School rolls decrease, children have fewer
opportunities to learn about God from His Word.
Training
An important function of SCM. is to train children’s workers and parents in children’s ministry,
covering topics such as:
· Teaching a Bible Lesson · Praise and Worship · Discipline · Counselling · Using Puppets ·
Many volunteers have worked with SCM, and have received and benefited from this training and “on
the job” experience. Some have since gone on to train others.
